There’s no patent on prayer

If you’re like me, you grew up in churches where people talked a lot about “getting a prayer through” to God. There were also certain people in church who were thought to have the special ability to accomplish this. Other than the pastor, they were the only ones you would call when you needed prayer, especially for something really serious.

If you grew up seeing this type of distinction made between “prayer warriors” and the regulars, you may have grown up thinking your own personal prayers didn’t amount to much. So you filled your library with every book on prayer you could find and tried to mimic others whose prayers you admired. You thought your prayers were only good enough to ask God for general blessings. But for crisis situations or situations that were slightly elevated above the norm, you felt – or were even told – you didn’t have that kind of “power” to get a prayer through. I know several people who are paralyzed in prayer because of this type of experience.

No matter the intensity of the situation or the urgency of the need, there is never a reason for you to ever discount your prayers. There is never a reason for you to attempt to sound like someone else or act like anyone else when you are praying. I have to remind myself that it doesn’t matter who’s listening or what they are thinking of me when I pray in groups or in public. Even if I fumble my words or lose my thoughts, if my prayer is super short or super lengthy, at the end of the day I am talking to my Heavenly Father. He is the One who receives our prayers.

I believe many of us are missing out on the impact of prayer in our lives because we are so focused on comparing ourselves with others and caring too much about what people may be thinking when they hear us pray. I know it can be difficult not to do this. It’s just being human. But when you’re stuck in this mode, it can consume you in your personal prayer time and if you’re not careful you’ll be focusing on how you pray even when you’re praying to God in private.

Because of Christ’s death on the cross, we can come boldly to God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). Not because we have a bold personality or bold words, but we come boldly because Christ gave us full access to God through his shed blood.  We can talk to God our Heavenly Father directly through prayer. It is a sweet and most precious gift. But it will remain unwrapped if we focus on comparisons instead of sincere and authentic communion.

Your prayer time with God is so special and such a privilege. You can’t allow yourself to be robbed of it by prayer insecurities fueled by what you or anyone else thinks about how you pray. You must commit to consistent prayer and press through. God isn’t rating our prayers; He delights in them.

Before you sit down, lie down, kneel down or stand up to pray, always remember:

Your prayers matter.

Your prayers count.

Your prayers are being heard.

So, keep praying.

Psalm 66:16-20

Come and hear, all you who fear God;
    let me tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;
19 but God has surely listened
    and has heard my prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

The Nations Are Crying Out

Most Christians have at least one Bible in their home, and whenever we need truth or guidance, we look to this holy book. More important, someone shared God’s Word with us or we read it in the Bible ourselves one day and believed in Jesus for salvation.

Now think back to when you did not know the Lord or when you needed direction as a Christian. But imagine this…God’s Word was available but just not in a language you could understand.

Can you imagine not being able to read in your own language God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life? (John 3:16 NLT)

There are more than 2,000 people groups that do not have God’s Word in their own language. The Seed Company, an affiliate of Wycliffe Bible Translators, has taken on the eternally rewarding task of getting this number down to zero.

But the one thing they need most to accomplish this work is prayer.

Prayer is essential to bible translation and The Seed Company needs dedicated people to pray regularly for the acceleration of bible translation for many people groups. Please consider becoming a prayer partner for a bible translation project.

I Can Go Through…For You

Going through a trial is hard. You’re hurting,confused and broken. Or maybe just frustrated and burned out. You endure the trial with hopes of one day crossing that finish line and finally experiencing freedom from the weights that have for so long been wearing you down.

But once you cross that finish line, you find your heart is a little softer and your ears are more attentive to the cares of others. Many times, it’s right after crossing the finish line of a trial that you cross paths with someone who needs the wisdom and life lessons that you’ve just learned.

After one of my most recent trials ended, I found that my prayer life for others became more intense. Just as much as I wanted to see answers to prayer for myself, I wanted to see blessings and breakthroughs for others. As much as I had prayed for an end to what I was going through, after I was able to minister to a broken-hearted friend all the pain I had endured seemed worth it. I thought to myself, “I can go through” if it means someone else can become victorious.

So now when I cross the finish line of a trial, it’s not just a celebration of what God has done in my life, but also what He is going to do for others through me, His vessel. I may not want to go through a season of uncertainty, heartache or disappointment but knowing there is someone –  another life, a soul – waiting for me at the finish line, gives me the strength to keep running the race.

Colossians 1:11-12
11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, 12 always thanking the Father…

His course or mine?

Jeremiah 10:23
I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own.
We are not able to plan our own course.

There is a freedom in knowing that you just don’t know it all, but that you serve a God who does.  As Christians, our lives are not our own, and all that we are or will ever be is through Christ Jesus and for His glory alone. How much more peaceful would our time here on earth be if we lived according to these truths?

When we finally realize that we are merely instruments in God’s hands to be used in ways that He alone sees fit, our struggles with what we want along this journey will cease.

When we finally accept that our plans outside of God’s plans will always fall short and fail to produce what our deceptive hearts have promised, we will without a doubt see more victories.

Prayer and faith really work

George Muller

I’m currently reading The Autobiography of George Muller for the second time. And I think I’ll continue reading the entire book again and again.

If you’ve never heard of George Muller, he was a man who cared for thousands of orphans in the 18oo’s by prayer and faith alone. If he had a need, he prayed, expected an answer and received an answer. The book is a journal reading that documents Muller’s prayers and when and how his prayers were answered. It is inspiring and energizing, and encourages the reader not to simply believe God can, but to know that He will.

I recommend this book for anyone who does not have full confidence that God hears and answers the prayers of those who belong to Him. It will change your life.
